Fishing Tournament & Festival to Raise Money for Marine Science Students

Nova Southeastern University (NSU) and Guy Harvey Outpost Resorts have teamed up to manage a new event combining fishing, conservation, research, and marine science scholarships next summer.

The inaugural Blazing Mako Tournament & Festival will be held June 16-19, 2016 at the Island Resort, a Guy Harvey Outpost in Islamorada. This three-day event is the new-and-improved version of what used to be called the Fort Lauderdale Billfish Tournament.

The fishing tournament will still be a big part of the event, but the newly formatted version will also include vendors, art exhibits and conservation displays, live music, trivia, and watersport competitions, and have a big focus on community engagement. Additionally, the event aims to raise $100,000 in scholarship funds for marine science students.

“Once again NSU and Guy Harvey are teaming up to help today’s students become tomorrow’s marine researchers and scientists,” Dr. Richard Dodge, Dean of NSU’s Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography, said in a news release. “We have a long-standing relationship with Dr. Harvey, and I am continually amazed at how much he wants to help students follow their dreams. This tournament promises to be fun, while at the same time continuing to add to Dr. Harvey’s legacy at NSU.”
