Today marks the start of Healthy Eating Week!

Healthy Eating Week is an educational program from the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) for all nurseries and schools in the UK and runs from June 3-7, 2013. The goal of the week is to promote cooking, healthy diets, an active lifestyle and being more aware of where food comes from.

BNF has provided lesson plans and classroom resources for teachers to promote Healthy Eating Week in nurseries and schools throughout the UK. Over 3,000 schools–representing over one million children–have registered to participate this week!

So what does this have to do with marine science? Seafish, the UK authority on seafood, is supporting Healthy Eating Week in order to educate young people on the benefits of eating seafood! Students will learn about the health benefits of seafood, as well as the importance of knowing where your seafood comes from.

“It is absolutely vital that children and young people understand the importance of seafood as part of a healthy balanced diet,” said Karen Galloway, Head of Marketing at Seafish, “and by supporting the week we will be helping hundreds of thousands of children across the UK to do just that.”
