Check out this great video about manta and mobula rays from Shark Savers. The Secret World of Mantas and Mobulas has amazing footage of these animals in their natural environment and was produced as part of the Manta Ray of Hope project.
Manta Ray of Hope is the only global effort that protects manta and mobula rays. These rays haven’t been studied extensively and very little is known about their populations. Although it is known that they are vulnerable to the effects of overfishing as they mature late and produce few offspring throughout their lives.
They are caught most often not for their meat, but for their gill rakers. The gill rakers are used in some cultures as medicine, as some claim they can purify the body and enhance circulation. But, this myth has been debunked and it is now clear that the gill rakers are not an effective medicine.
Based on this information and a report published earlier in the year, manta and mobula rays will be discussed at the 2013 meeting of the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).
